How to Accept International Payments as a Bahamian Business

Getting Paid by International Customers Shouldn't Be This Hard — But It Often Is

You quoted the project. The international client loved the proposal. They want to move forward. And then someone asks: "How do I pay you?" This is the moment where many Bahamian businesses hit a wall. A wire transfer to a Bahamian bank account is cumbersome and slow. PayPal may not be fully available. Stripe is restricted in certain configurations. And asking an international client to mail a check is a conversation that ends deals.

Understanding the Bahamian Payment Landscape

Banking infrastructure: Bahamian banks can receive international wire transfers, but the fees and processing times make small transactions impractical. A $500 USD wire transfer with a $25 incoming wire fee and 2-5 business day clearing is a poor experience for both parties.

Currency: The Bahamian dollar (BSD) is pegged 1:1 with USD, which simplifies USD transactions. Always clarify to international clients that your USD prices are equivalent.

Option 1: Wise (Formerly TransferWise) — The Most Practical Starting Point

Wise provides receiving accounts in multiple countries (US, UK, EU, Australia). Your clients in the US can pay a US bank account number that Wise provides you, and Wise converts and delivers the funds to your Bahamian bank account. Cost: Wise typically charges 0.4-1% of the transfer amount — significantly lower than wire transfer fees. A $1,000 USD payment might cost $4-10 in total fees. Best for: Businesses invoicing international clients $500+ per transaction, particularly those working with US and UK clients.

Option 2: PayPal Business — Widely Accepted but Expensive

PayPal is the most globally recognized payment platform. Cost: PayPal charges 3.49% + $0.49 USD per transaction for US-based clients, higher for international. On a $1,000 USD payment, that's approximately $35 in fees — significantly more than Wise. Best for: Businesses receiving occasional international payments from individual clients who specifically prefer PayPal.

Option 3: Bank Wire Transfer — Slow and Expensive but Universal

Your client instructs their bank to send funds to your Bahamian bank account using SWIFT codes and routing information. Cost: Incoming wire fees at Bahamian banks typically range from $15-35 BSD per incoming transfer. Your client also pays their bank's outgoing wire fee. Best for: Large transactions ($2,000+ USD) where percentage-based fees would be higher than the flat wire fee.

Option 4: Stripe — Available with Workarounds

Stripe's merchant services have historically required a legal entity registered in a Stripe-supported country. If your business is incorporated or has a subsidiary in the US, UK, or Canada, you can use that entity to receive Stripe payments. Stripe + a US business account (or using Wise's US account details) creates a functional international payment workflow. Cost: Stripe charges 2.9% + $0.30 USD per successful transaction.

Building Your International Payment System

Tier 1: Primary method for US/UK/EU clients — Wise Business Account — Low fees, fast setup, professional virtual local account numbers in multiple countries. Tier 2: Secondary method for convenience — PayPal Business — Accept it for occasional transactions. Tier 3: For large transactions — Bank Wire Transfer — Provide your bank's SWIFT information for large-value professional services projects.

Practical Invoicing Tips for International Clients

Always specify currency clearly. Write "BSD 1,500 (equivalent to USD 1,500, as Bahamian Dollar is pegged 1:1 to USD)" to remove ambiguity. Include payment instructions on every invoice. Each invoice should have a clear "How to Pay" section ready to use. Set clear payment terms. International transactions add processing time — adjust your terms accordingly. Follow up proactively. A polite follow-up at the halfway point of your payment term dramatically reduces late payments.

Solving the payment problem is a prerequisite to growing international revenue — but it's just the first step. The businesses that capitalize on Bahamian advantages are those that can receive payment reliably and professionally, present as credible international service providers, and proactively market to international clients.
